About Us
Our mission is to give everyday people clear, trustworthy guidance on portable power stations — based on rigorous hands-on testing, not manufacturer marketing. We help you find equipment that will actually perform when it matters most.
Grid Down Guide was founded in 2013 by Marcus Hale after a week-long power outage exposed a hard truth: most people have no reliable backup power, and the information available online to help them choose one was superficial at best, dishonest at worst. Marcus had spent years working in off-grid energy consulting, and he saw an opportunity to bring that professional knowledge to a general audience who needed it.
We started by reviewing a handful of early lithium power stations — the category was new, the products were inconsistent, and there were almost no independent testers willing to put in the work. We built our own testing protocols borrowed from electrical engineering standards, and began publishing detailed, measured results. Readers noticed. Word spread. What started as a personal project became one of the most referenced independent resources in the portable power space.
Today, our small team includes an electrical engineer, a certified emergency preparedness specialist, and a former outdoor gear retailer with fifteen years of field experience. Together we’ve tested over 180 portable power stations across all price ranges, capacity classes, and use cases — from ultralight 100Wh units for weekend camping to 3,000Wh whole-home backup systems. Every product we recommend has been physically handled and measured by a human being on our team.
We are independently operated. We earn a commission on purchases made through affiliate links on this site, but that commercial relationship never influences our editorial conclusions. If a product underperforms in testing, we say so clearly. Our readers trust us because we’ve earned that trust — one honest review at a time.
Our Review Process
1
Research
We analyze manufacturer specifications, user-reported data, and industry teardowns before a single unit arrives at our door.
2
Test
Every station undergoes a structured battery of real-world tests including capacity verification, charge speed measurement, output stability under load, and thermal monitoring.
3
Review
We write our findings in plain language — what the numbers mean for actual use cases, who this product is right for, and where it falls short.
4
Update
We revisit published reviews when firmware updates, recalled units, or long-term reliability data warrant a correction or re-rating.
